To celebrate International Earth Day 2011, a park cleanup action was organized by the The Earth Org Hungary on the
Budapest's People's Island (Népsziget).
On that sunny Saturday morning, and an early morning at that, eager participants arrived and spent the whole day
performing cheerful action in nature.
Overall about 300 people took part in the event, and all the litter and trash was removed from the island.
We used up hundreds of trash bags and we collected about 40m³ trash.
On the southern part of the People's Island, the sportsmen of the KSI
row-boat centerrenovated their sites, with fence paintings, thanks to the organizing efforts of the
Movement for the People's Island (Népszigetért Mozgalom).
Also the homeless of the Léthatáron (On Border of Existence)
Foundation and Rés (Gap) Foundation's participated in our efforts, and at
the end of the day, they celebrated with an outdoor lunch.
The headquarters of the northern part of the island was at the Dog
Training Center of the People's Island (Népszigeti Kutyasuli), and we thank them for their help and support. Lots of their members
participated in the action by showing a very good example.
The bags, gloves and the free transportation were provided by the
Municipal Cleaning Maintenance Co. (FKF Zrt.) and we thank for their generous support.
We hope that our actions prompt many more people to perform similar actions, thereby creating a much better Budapert to
live in.
Thank you, eager residents of Újpest (District IV) and Angyalföld (District XIII.) and for all the participants and
joining organizations!
And special thanks to the joining organizers:
Berezvay Balázs (Movement for the People's Island), Mersich Ágota
(Léthatáron Foundation), Gyulainé Enikő
(Dog Training Center)!

”By the time I arrived to Nepszíget on Saturday, April 16 for the Earth Organization cleanup, work was well under way.
Volunteers had arrived, picked up trash bags and ventured out to various parts of the island under Laci's diretction. As we headed to
meet Laci, we saw volunteers picking up trash in every direction - a rare sight in Budapest. My group headed to the river
”beach” where sand, wildlife and beautiful views all suffered the harmful effects of trash and litter.
Laci coordinated not just individual volunteers but entire organizations, like the local homeless shelter, to come and help. He managed
to keep us motivated, energized and driven while maintaining his humor and good nature. The gratitute and good spirts were evident from
the volunteers and staff of the dog training school located on the island. I had a fantastic time working with Laci and Earth Org.”
