Trees are the largest plants which inhabit the Earth, and are without doubt one also of its most important forms of life.
In fact most of the life on Earth owes its existence to trees. Not only do they provide a home to many animals, birds, and
insects, but they also have a much more important role upon which we are all very much dependant. They absorb Carbon Dioxide, and clean
the Planets air, and then they release oxygen for us to breathe. Trees precipitate rain, positively affect the climate, prevent soil
erosion, and provide shade and shelter.
Trees harbour many different life forms and are their own eco-systems. Birds, ants, butterflies, spiders, reptiles, and a
myriad of other life forms use and live in and around trees. Chopping a tree down, kills not only the tree, a whole complex eco-system
dies with it.
The saying, ”trees are life” contains much truth. For instance, half of all the species of life on Earth, live
only in the rain forests, which themselves only take up 7% of the total dry surface of the Earth.
Trees truly are mans best friend, and are a vital and necessary part of all of our lives. And if that is not enough, they
are also one of the most beautiful of all Natures creations.
Trees most usually live together in colonies called forests, and deforestation is the name given to the destruction of
entire colonies of trees. The World Resources Institute has reported that up to 80% of all the Earths natural forests have already been
destroyed. (Hatch 1997).
Worst of all, deforestation is taking place at the exact time when we need trees the most, which is right now, when
industrial pollution, causing too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, is at it's highest levels in history.
To those of us who know how vitally important trees are; this is a serious situation indeed.
To give some idea of the amount of trees being cut down, the Amazon rain forest alone is disappearing at the rate of 1500
sq kilometres per year.
The only bit of good news is that temperate forests are recovering in some first world countries, where they are better
understood and better protected.
THE EARTH ORGANIZATION understands the fundamental role of trees and forests on Earth, and recognises the critical need to
educate people and protect and re-grow our natural forests to help avert global warming.
There is something that we can all do to reduce Global Warming – if enough of us do it quickly enough, and that is
to PLANT TREES, a LOT of trees.
There is too much Carbon dioxide sitting in the Earth's atmosphere, put there by the burning of fossil fuels. (Coal, Gas,
Petrol, Diesel etc.)
This Carbon Dioxide in the air traps the warmth of the sun on Earth by not allowing enough of the suns heat to go back
into space. Trees are natural converters of Carbon Dioxide to Oxygen.
This is how trees ”breathe” – they inhale (breathe in) Carbon Dioxide which causes heating up of the
Earth, and then they ”exhale” (breathe out) Oxygen.
So each tree we plant draws in Carbon Dioxide out of the atmosphere, helping to cool the Earth a tiny bit.
If we plant millions and millions of new trees it will make a huge difference and we may even turn Global Warming around.
This sounds like a lot of trees to have to plant, but there are a lot of people on Earth – who care enough to do
something about it.
THE EARTH ORGANIZATION is launching an International Tree Planting Campaign spanning 150 countries.
As a fun part of ones membership obligation, every member of the Earth Organization must plant and bring to maturity,
enough indigenous trees to provide sufficient oxygen for each member of his or her family. Additional trees must also be planted to
absorb the carbon dioxide produced by the exhausts of their family cars.
In this way, all Earth Org members are taking responsibility for all their own oxygen requirements and are also converting
carbon dioxide from their cars and air travel back into oxygen again.
A large growing tree will produce enough oxygen for one person to breathe. The average family car requires two trees to
absorb its exhaust fumes.
| each family member | 1 tree | Total: | |
| each family car | 2 trees | Total: | |
| gift to the Earth | 2 trees | Total: | |
| | | Grand total: | |
This will show you how many trees you need to plant and bring to maturity to take care of your family needs, plus one
extra for the Earth.
Once you have done it, you become a ”FREE AIR” member of the Earth Organization.
Planting trees is easy. One gets seedlings, a shovel, and away you go. All the fun is in doing it yourself. Planting a tree
connects you with your trees, and it's an easy way of feeling good. Just ask anyone who has done it. If you can't plant the trees in your
own garden, then plant them out of town, or ask your local town or city council where they would like to have trees planted. Take the
family, go with friends or other Earth Org members, and have fun.
The Earth Org will provide information as to which species of tree, indigenous to the area in which one lives must be
planted, and where possible, will make recommendations on where to acquire the seedlings. If you would like this information provided to
you, contact us on one of the mails below.
Once you have completed your tree planting, please mail us with the subject ”Free Air Member”, and let us know
which country you are from and how many of which species you were able to plant.
